Thus the birth of my Crinkle Taggie Blanket project.
As I previously mentioned, I have a little munchkin who is 22 mths. He is constantly walking around carrying his blanket and nap mat (I think because he likes the softness of if). When my daughter was his age she had a taggie Blanket and I thought what a perfect thing for him..... problem was hers was totally pink, purple and frilly. No go for little Mr. Man. After digging in the closet (and pantry) I was able to round up the supplies needed to create a taggie just for him.
Here's the detailed breakdown if you want to try one on your own....
Supplies Needed:
Ribbon
Pins
Measuring Tape
Sewing Machine
Thread
Empty Plastic Bag or something to the consistency of a Baby wipes bag (I used a cleaned plastic inside of a Cheez-It Box)
Step One:
Cut materials to amounts as follows.
Fabric: 2 15x15 squares (Feel free to make these bigger or smaller depending on the size you want your final product)
Ribbon: 16 5 inch strips (I did 8 of each design but you can be creative with this depending on how you want your taggie to look)
Step 2:
Fold ribbon in half (right side out) and pin to the right side of fabric. Have the loops facing the middle. I alternated ribbon patterns and did 4 loops on each side. This may vary depending on ribbon width and square width. Make sure to leave the corners open or once it is sewn they will look really crowded.
Step Three:
Once the ribbons have been pinned take the other square and lay it on top of the square with the ribbons. Right sides should be facing each other. Move the pins to the top layer making sure to catch the ribbon and bottom layer. This will keep everything in place while it is being stitched.
Step Four: (optional)
My son loves things that make noise so I opted to make this a crinkle taggie blanket. This step can be skipped, but the kids seems to love that noise.
Open a plastic bag (I used the inside of a Cheez-It box but a plastic wipes wrapper also works really well) and pin it to two opposite edges of the wrong side of the taggie. (This will be your top layer as the entire taggie is stitched.
Step 5:
Stitch around all sides but one corner, of the blanket making sure not to miss the ribbon edges or the plastic bag. I used about 1/2 inch seam allowance all the way around. Clip the corners (but be sure not to clip the seams) to reduce bulk and make sharper creases. If you do not leave the corner open you will have no way to flip right side out.
Step 6:
Fold under the corner that was left open and top stitch around the entire taggie for stability.

Congrats you made it and now have a new crinkle taggie to give as a gift or to your own little one. Remember be creative and add your own touch to this blanket and if you have a little imperfection don't worry, that makes the product unique! A couple ideas for variety are using different fabrics on each side or quilting fabrics together to make more patterns. Most importantly HAVE FUN!!! I know me and my daughter did when we created this one.
