Impromptu crinkle taggie DIY

I'm feeling at this point that I'm liking the shape of the blog so far, and my master curtains are on hold till I can go buy fabric and the blinds are installed.  In addition to those projects being works in progress, last night I found out that this evening Mr. Morning Sunshine would be attending a concert with one of his friends.  This led to several emotions but mostly the thought of well what can I do with my evening that is also fun?

Thus the birth of my Crinkle Taggie Blanket project.

As I previously mentioned, I have a little munchkin who is 22 mths.  He is constantly walking around carrying his blanket and nap mat (I think because he likes the softness of if).  When my daughter was his age she had a taggie Blanket and I thought what a perfect thing for him..... problem was hers was totally pink, purple and frilly.  No go for little Mr. Man.  After digging in the closet (and pantry) I was able to round up the supplies needed to create a taggie just for him.

Here's the detailed breakdown if you want to try one on your own....

Supplies Needed:

Soft Fabric
Ribbon
Pins
Measuring Tape
Sewing Machine
Thread
Empty Plastic Bag or something to the consistency of a Baby wipes bag  (I used a cleaned plastic inside of a Cheez-It Box)

Step One:

Cut materials to amounts as follows.

Fabric: 2 15x15 squares (Feel free to make these bigger or smaller depending on the size you want your final product)

Ribbon: 16 5 inch strips (I did 8 of each design but you can be creative with this depending on how you want your taggie to look)

Step 2:

Fold ribbon in half (right side out) and pin to the right side of fabric.  Have the loops facing the middle.  I alternated ribbon patterns and did 4 loops on each side.  This may vary depending on ribbon width and square width.  Make sure to leave the corners open or once it is sewn they will look really crowded.

Step Three:

Once the ribbons have been pinned take the other square and lay it on top of the square with the ribbons.  Right sides should be facing each other.  Move the pins to the top layer making sure to catch the ribbon and bottom layer.  This will keep everything in place while it is being stitched.

Step Four: (optional)

My son loves things that make noise so I opted to make this a crinkle taggie blanket.  This step can be skipped, but the kids seems to love that noise.

Open a plastic bag (I used the inside of a Cheez-It box but a plastic wipes wrapper also works really well) and pin it to two opposite edges of the wrong side of the taggie.  (This will be your top layer as the entire taggie is stitched.

Step 5:

Stitch around all sides but one corner, of the blanket making sure not to miss the ribbon edges or the plastic bag.  I used about 1/2 inch seam allowance all the way around.  Clip the corners (but be sure not to clip the seams) to reduce bulk and make sharper creases.  If you do not leave the corner open you will have no way to flip right side out.

 Step 6:

Fold under the corner that was left open and top stitch around the entire taggie for stability.

GREAT JOB!

Congrats you made it and now have a new crinkle taggie to give as a gift or to your own little one.  Remember be creative and add your own touch to this blanket and if you have a little imperfection don't worry, that makes the product unique!  A couple ideas for variety are using different fabrics on each side or quilting fabrics together to make more patterns.  Most importantly HAVE FUN!!!  I know me and my daughter did when we created this one.

Use this tutorial?  Please share how it went!

Even though I haven't yet completed a DIY project this weekend, in my mind, this is what the best weekends are made of! Hope you enjoyed yours as much as I have mine.  :)

Weekend Begins!

It's Friday afternoon and I am so ready for the weekend.  Its been a long week.  Definitely an week of fact being stranger than fiction.  I would have never guessed that the bank next to my son's daycare would be robbed to say the least.  (Yes that is a true statement!)  The good news is that I have been thinking and dreaming all day about my weekend projects.

As mentioned before I am going to continue to adjust and modify my blog but to be honest the more I change things the more I realize I'm not sure it is ever going to be perfect.

Blogs are fluid and ever changing which is one thing that I am drawn to about them.  It is a place to illustrate and describe your thinking, emotions literally but also in a visual way.  As strange as it sounds I like change.  Not in everything all at once but I feel it keeps life interesting.

So, I raise my glass of sparkling grape juice (remember I am 5 mths preggo over here) to proost (cheers) my ever changing blog face and whatever the weekend universe lets me tackle in DIY projects.  Hopefully this is me by the end of the weekend:

Sew and paint on my friends and please share what you have envisioned for your weekend future or where you found fact to be stranger than fiction.    I love to hear your stories.  Makes me feel a little more normal.  :)

Late Bloomer

Ever have a vision for something and are not 100% sure how to make it come to fruition?  Kinda how I feel about my little piece of cyberspace....

So this leads me to my next goal/project.

Now remember I said my project could be anything so no ughs please. I promise there is benefit in this next one for you the reader too.

I am going to work toward getting the format of my blog to match my vision. Now keep in mind my vision might change as I become more engrossed in this blogger world but for now and the near future it is pretty clear.

So bear, wait no bare, ok never mind lets just say hang in there with me as my page will but undergoing construction over the next week or so.

Stay tuned for the final product. (But don't get ur hopes too high, I am still new to the cyber world of bloggers. And yes I realize that I am late on the curve considering people have been blogging for almost a decade now.) better late than never right?

Any tips and/or suggestions for helpful sites or go to blogs or you just want to give you advice to a virgin blogger  please do tell.... Sharing is caring!

Mission Complete

Feeling good about the renovation process of my bookcase. :)  Much improved in my opinion!!!

What do you think?

Bookworm

I LOVE to read, therefore my first project in my bedroom will be re-doing a bookshelf I got from a neighbor for a couple bucks.  (Trust me the shape it is in I'm not sure I even got a deal paying the couple of bucks!)

Plan:
Stain it and put fabric behind the shelves to make it more appealing to the eye.

Goal: Complete over the weekend!

Please share any ideas you have to make a bookcase pop or your experience with renovating yuck furniture.  I'm a newbie and would love to hear your advice and stories!

Big Picture

So the first project that I want to complete is my master bedroom.

We moved into our house about 6 months ago and have been completely preoccupied with life.  You know the saying "Life Happens"?  Well it does in most places except in my master bedroom.  That place is dull and blah!!  I figure I will start this blogging adventure out with a bang and go big by making that my first mission......

So to give you a visual image of my bedroom currently here is how I would describe it:

  • Bland
  • Blah
  • Boring
  • Dull
  • Naked- (and not in a good way!.... we have no window coverings, literally NONE!!  My neighbors can walk by and peek in... not so cool for a variety of reasons, you can only imagine.)

Now to give you a visual of how my dream Master Suite will hopefully be described at the end of this voyage:

  • Peaceful
  • Calming
  • Serene
  • Elegant
  • Classy
  • Stylish
  • Cozy

I realize this list is very high hopes but if I can have even one or two of those words float across my brain as I enter my room daily, I will feel like it was a successful project.

So you say "Great idea!  Mrs. Night Owl let's get started DIYing away and make a masterpiece."  Here's the deal, this goal is about a gazillion million little projects within my bedroom.  Ok, I'm over-exaggerating but you get the idea, right?  I need to break it up so it is manageable or I will be overwhelmed and under productive.  If I don't break it into bite size pieces I will want to lay down and take a nap (what I usually enjoy most when I am overwhelmed and stressed out) instead of digging in and starting to beautify my room.  Mission Master Suite will birth several or more projects over the next month or so.  (Let's just hope it isn't as painful or messy as real childbirth....)

Have a master suite you are proud to display?  Please send ideas and/or suggestions my way... I would love to hear, post, and see your stories of tackling this size of a project.

Now that's talent!!

Mission Towel Animal: Complete!

Ok, you got me: This was from an awesome cruise me and Mr. Morning Sunshine (my hubby) went on as a babymoom before baby 3 arrives.  But still pretty cool huh?!

First real project to come later this week..... Stay Tuned!

Beginnings

Hello.  I am Mrs Night Owl.  I work all day in education, I come home in the evening to my hubby and munchkins (my favorite part of the day!), and then once the house is quiet and on the weekends, my projects come to life.
Facts about me:
  • I am OCD about checking things off my To Do list. Yes, I am the type to add something to my list just so I can put a check mark by it.  Makes me feel productive in some way.
  • I am pregnant with baby 3 (and lately feeling more like Mrs. Night Sloth instead of Owl)
  • I LOVE projects!!
Two out of those three things are why I have decided to start this blog.  (You can pick which two)

I want to chronicle my To Do list of projects. I hope for these projects (I use the term loosely) to range from home improvement, to relationship improvement and everything in between.

I look forward to this journey of hearing and interacting with yall, as we share, discuss and display in our completed 'projects' or works in progess together.
